Unfiled Tax Returns

While the majority of taxpayers fully intend to pay their taxes, some are caught up in some crisis that prevent them from doing so. There is a lot of misinformation on the internet about ways to legally stop paying taxes -- such as declaring oneself a sovereign citizen. If you have fallen victim to the con artists spreading such lies, Brunoro Law can help you get back into compliance, and work with you to develop a plan to legally reduce your tax burden.

There are two main components to cases involving back taxes: paperwork and payment. If you are putting off filing because you dread doing the paperwork, don’t fret. In most cases, the government only requires delinquent filers to go back and file 6 years of returns. This is a daunting task, but it is far less daunting than the alternative -- prison, since, as you are probably aware, the most egregious cases of tax evasion can result in incarceration. Besides remembering the harsh consequences of dereliction, please be aware that completing the necessary paperwork is one of the areas in which an experienced tax attorney can effectively assist you.

As previously mentioned, incomplete records are a common issue in these cases, so it is important to contact past employers or get copies of old W-2s from the IRS.

As for how much your required payment will be, the biggest factor is obviously the income or profit to be taxed. There are, however, many other factors that play a role in determining how much the IRS will ultimately collect. Negotiated settlements are common, and the amount settled on is often far less than the amount actually owed. For some people, bankruptcy is an option that clears away tax debts.

There is no good reason for not filing you tax returns when you have the help of a well-qualified, experienced tax attorney by your side to help you get back on the right track. If you are dealing with the stress of unfiled tax returns I urge you to contact our firm to schedule a free initial consultation.
